Irene J. (Chakalos) Melchor, 69, of Gilsum died on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at the Cheshire County-Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland after a period of declining health.
She was born in Keene on July 22, 1946, the daughter of John and Jeannette (Strifos) Chakalos.
Irene grew up in Keene, attended Keene schools and was a 1964 graduate of Keene High School. She was employed by the former Sprague-Carlton Furniture Company in Keene for 10 years. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Keene.
She loved her family, gardening, animals, taking care of her plants and flowers and fishing. One of her favorite pasttimes was watching her son and her grandson play baseball.
Survivors include her son, Philip Goodnow of Marlborough; her daughter, Heidi Melchor of Clinton, Mass.; her sister, Pamela Savard of Keene; and her grandson, Christopher Goodnow of Keene; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, July 27th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Avenue, West Keene. Family and friends are invited to call at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St., Keene (www.foleyfuneralhome.com) on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.
